How to Get Hulu Without Ads in 2025
If you want to watch Hulu without ads, the simplest way to do so is to pay for one of the no-ads plan options. However, getting rid of ads on your Hulu account is also possible without paying for a higher tier subscription. Here’s how to do it.
Few things are more annoying than having your favorite movie interrupted by ads every few minutes. If you’re a Hulu user and opted for the more affordable, ad-supported plan, you might now be regretting your decision. Thankfully, there are ways to watch Hulu without ads, and we’ll go over a few options in this guide.
Hulu is one of the most popular streaming services in the U.S. We say in the U.S., because it’s not available elsewhere, such as in Canada (check out our guide on how to get Hulu in Canada).
You can bypass that limitation by using a VPN, though — NordVPN is our favorite VPN for that. Hulu has several plans, including some which let you watch local live TV channels, which makes it the streaming service of choice for many.
If you want to block Hulu ads and enjoy your shows and movies — like Reservation Dogs, Justified: City Primeval or Only Murders in the Building — uninterrupted, this guide will show how to do just that. Keep in mind, though, that there’s no way to avoid commercials on live channels.

Hulu Without Ads: Why Does Hulu Have Ads?
The most affordable Hulu plan is the one with ads, available to those who would rather watch ads than spend more money on a pricier monthly subscription. Hulu uses ads to make up for the revenue lost due to the price difference between the two plans, and to be able to offer a wider variety of content at a more competitive price.
Does Hulu + Live TV Have Ads?
Yes. As is the case with other live TV providers, you can’t avoid commercials on live TV. However, the Hulu + Live TV plans also have plenty of on-demand content available. This includes Hulu’s own content, as well as Disney+ and ESPN+ content that comes bundled with the live TV plan.
You can get Hulu’s content and anything from Disney+ ad-free, but ESPN+ content is only available with ads.
How Much Is Hulu Without Ads?
Hulu’s standard plans — without live TV — cost $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year for the ad-supported plan. The ad-free plan is $18.99, and there is no annual payment option.
Hulu Plan | Monthly Price | Annual Price |
---|---|---|
Hulu With Ads | $9.99 | $99.99 |
Hulu Without Ads | $18.99 | |
Hulu (Student Discount) | $1.99 |
If you also want to watch live TV or get a bundle, check out the pricing tables further down. Remember that the ad-free part only applies to Hulu on-demand and Disney Plus.
How Much Is Hulu Without Ads for Students?
If you’re a student, you can get Hulu’s most affordable, ad-supported plan for $1.99 per month. You do need to be enrolled in a U.S. Title IV accredited college that can be verified via SheerID. Unfortunately, the ad-free and live TV plans aren’t available with a student discount. As an alternative, try a free ad-blocker browser extension or mobile app.
Is Hulu Bundle No Ads or Ad-Supported?
In addition to all other plans, Hulu also offers the Disney bundle, which you can get as an ad-supported or ad-free plan. There are various pricing tiers for this bundle. The table below shows all of the Hulu bundle options available.
Plan | Price | Includes | Ads? |
---|---|---|---|
Hulu + Live TV | $82.99 per month | On-demand content Disney+ ESPN+ Live TV | |
Hulu (No Ads) + Live TV | $95.99 per month | On-demand content Disney+ ESPN+ Live TV | * |
Disney Bundle Duo Basic | $10.99 per month | On-demand content Disney+ | |
Disney Bundle Duo Premium | $19.99 per month | On-demand content Disney+ | |
Disney Bundle Trio Basic | $16.99 per month | On-demand content Disney+ ESPN+ | |
Disney Bundle Trio Premium | $26.99 per month | On-demand content Disney+ ESPN+ | * |
How to Upgrade to Hulu’s Ad-Free Plan
If you’re using an ad-supported Hulu plan at the moment, upgrading to a Hulu no-ads plan is very easy to do. The following steps show you how to upgrade your plan.
- Log On to Hulu
Go to the Hulu website, click the menu icon in the upper-right corner and click “log in.”
- Enter Your Login Details
Enter the email and password you use with Hulu and click “log in.”
- Go to Your Account Settings
Click your user icon in the upper-right corner and click “account.”
- Manage Your Plan
Scroll down to the “your subscription” section and click “manage plan” on your current plan.
- Choose a New Plan
From the “plans” menu, choose the plan you’d like to subscribe to and toggle it on. To avoid choosing an ad-supported plan, make sure the plan says “no ads.” Click “review changes,” then “submit” at the bottom to save your plan change. You should now be able to watch Hulu without ads.
How to Skip Ads on Hulu
If you don’t feel like paying for a more expensive Hulu subscription but still want to try blocking ads on Hulu, there are a few ways to do so. Keep in mind that while these methods are effective when it comes to blocking most of those annoying ads, they won’t do much when it comes to boring commercials on the live TV plans.
Many effective ad blockers include a script-blocking feature that prevents ad scripts from loading before they appear on streaming services. You can use ad-blockers in various forms; here are six options for blocking ads on Hulu’s ads plan.
Different ad-blocking solutions have varying effectiveness rates with Hulu due to the service’s aggressive anti-adblocking measures.
- Use ad-blocking extensions for your browser, like uBlock Origin, Ghostery and AdBlock Plus. However, Google Chrome has begun ending support for uBlock Origin, and it may be completely unavailable on Chrome soon.
- Ad-blocking apps like AdGuard offer specialized mobile apps that can block ads system-wide on Android and iOS devices.
- VPNs like NordVPN or Surfshark offer security packages (like NordVPN’s Threat Protection Pro) with ad-blockers that can block Hulu ads at the network level, which works across all devices connected to the VPN, not just in browsers.
- Use ad-blocking browsers, like Brave Browser. The Brave Browser comes with built-in ad blocking capabilities.
- The two-tabs method for skipping ads involves opening the same show in two browser tabs, playing both simultaneously (with one muted), and switching between them whenever ads appear in one tab. While effective, this requires a fast internet connection and you’ll end up rewatching some content as you switch between tabs.
- Refreshing your browser while watching — a simple technique where you reload the page when an ad begins playing — can sometimes skip the ad entirely or shorten the ad break significantly.
You can find step-by-step instructions for all of these methods in our upcoming guide. However, the simplest ways to block ads on Hulu is to watch in your browser, as opposed to the Hulu app, and use ad-blocking browser extensions.
There are extensions for most major browsers, but there are also dedicated ad-blocking browsers.
Methods for Advanced Users
If you have a little more technical knowledge, you might want to try one of these methods:
- Advanced users can utilize browser developer tools to identify and disable specific JavaScript files responsible for ad delivery on Hulu, though this requires technical knowledge and may need readjustment after Hulu updates its player.
- Some technical users have reported success using Chrome’s Inspect Element feature to modify the Hulu video player’s DOM structure during ad breaks, though this method requires constant manual intervention and can break with site updates.
- Another method for blocking Hulu ads across all devices on your network is to implement DNS-based ad blocking. Services like AdGuard DNS or open-source solutions like Pi-hole can filter out ad-serving domains at the network level. To implement this method, you’ll need to change your router’s DNS settings or configure individual devices to use the ad-blocking DNS servers.
How Effective Are Traditional Ad-Blockers With Hulu?
As we touched on in the note farther up, Hulu can be a tricky beast. Hulu employs server-side ad insertion (SSAI) technology that embeds advertisements directly into the video stream rather than loading them separately.
This can make traditional ad blockers less effective against Hulu ads as they can’t easily distinguish between the actual content and the advertisement content within the same video stream. This is why we recommend ad-blocking extensions.
Can I Skip Hulu Ads on a Smart TV?
While most smart TVs don’t support traditional ad blockers, configuring your home router to use ad-blocking DNS servers like AdGuard DNS may help reduce ads when watching Hulu on television sets and other streaming devices.
Can I Skip Hulu Ads But Watch Ads on Other Sites?
If you only want to block Hulu ads, but not other ads when browsing, you can use Hulu Ad Skipper.
This is a specialized Chrome extension designed specifically to target Hulu’s ad delivery system by fast forwarding and muting them. This helps avoid Hulu’s anti-adblocking detection systems that might otherwise prevent playback.
Some ad blockers, like Adblock Plus, include an allowlist feature, allowing you to support specific websites while still blocking Hulu ads, which is useful if you want to support some content creators but enjoy Hulu ad-free.
How Do I Know if My Ad-Blocker Is Working?
To determine if your ad-blocking method is working effectively with Hulu, we recommend testing it with content you know contains frequent ad breaks. If you’re still seeing placeholder screens or loading spinners where ads would normally appear, your blocker is partially working but may need reconfiguration.
For maximum effectiveness, consider combining methods—for example, using both a VPN with ad blocking capabilities and a specialized browser extension simultaneously.
Can I Download Hulu Content?
Hulu’s ad-free and ad-supported plans with Live TV both include download capabilities, allowing users to watch content offline. Downloaded content typically plays without advertisements, as Hulu cannot serve fresh ads without an internet connection.
To leverage this approach, download episodes or movies when connected to Wi-Fi, then watch them later without worrying about ad interruptions.
Will I Still See Ads With Hulu (No Ads) + Live TV?
Unfortunately, regardless of the methods you use to get rid of ads, you can’t remove commercials that come as promotional content on live TV. You can get a better viewing experience with on-demand shows and movies, but when it comes to the live TV channels Hulu broadcasts, you will have to deal with commercials.
If you find yourself recording live TV content often, you will find that the commercials are being recorded as well, but you can fast-forward through them. To add to this, there are certain on-demand shows that will show an ad break before and after each episode, due to streaming rights.
Hulu also gives you the option to add premium partner add-ons from Max, Showtime, Starz and Cinemax to your subscription. While these add-ons don’t have ad breaks, you may see a short ad before some of the videos.
Final Thoughts: Skip Hulu Ads
A Hulu subscription gets you streaming rights to some excellent shows such as ‘The Handmaid’s Tale,’ but with so many ads, it can become very annoying, very quickly. While there is a Hulu no-ads plan that will almost completely remove ads from Hulu and Disney+ content, it’s much more expensive than the basic option.
If you want to remove ads, your options are to either upgrade to the Hulu no-ads plan, or to try one of the other workarounds mentioned above. Ad-blocking extensions for your browser work best, but we’ve also had success with the other methods we mentioned. For more related guides, check out our Hulu channel guide.
Have you been using Hulu for some time and want to remove ads as much as possible? Would you pay for the ad-free plan, or would you rather use one of the workarounds we mentioned? Let us know in the comments and, as always, thank you for reading.
FAQ: Stream Hulu Without the Ads
You can get Hulu’s on-demand content with no ads if you opt for the Hulu no-ads plan, which costs extra, or if you use an ad blocker to block the ads in your browser.
The best way to get rid of Hulu ads for free is to use an ad blocker for your browser while you’re watching content.
Because of streaming rights, there are certain shows in the Hulu on-demand library that include a short ad break, before and after each episode. To add to this, some of the on-demand content in Hulu’s bundles — such as the ESPN+ content — isn’t available without ads. In addition, live TV channels will always have commercials, regardless of your Hulu account plan.
