The All American television series is loosely based on the real-life story of NFL and Super Bowl champion Spencer Paysinger. The series retells some of Spencer’s early life and career as a high school footballer with added tweaks to dramatize it. The star is even a co-producer of the show.

Spencer James, the main protagonist based on Paysinger, is from Compton and attends South Crenshaw High where he also plays football. Coach Billy Baker from the Beverly Hills High School football team recognizes Spencer’s talent and wants to recruit him to his own team. Spencer’s mom and his best friend, Coop, persuade him to take the opportunity and get his big break. 

However, in order to secure his transfer, he has to move in with Billy and his family in Beverly Hills, a vastly different area from Compton. This causes tension between him and Billy’s own son, Jordan, who is also on the team, but ignites new relationships, notably with Jordan’s sister, Olivia. The series navigates common issues, including racism, class discrimination and division, and bullying.
