Moonflower Murders Plot (No Spoilers)
While we won’t leak any spoilers, it’s good to know that ‘Moonflower Murders’ is a sequel to the acclaimed ‘Magpie Murders’ show. They’re both a mystery-within-a-mystery type of show based on the novels of the same name by Anthony Horowitz. Each ingenious adaptation merges Susan’s world with that of her client’s 1950’s fictional character, Atticus Pund (Timothy McMullan).
In ‘Magpie Murders,’ literary editor Susan Ryeland (Lesley Manville) finds herself in an amateur sleuth role. Susan’s prima donna author, Alan Conway, hands her the manuscript for his latest novel.
She later realizes the final chapter is missing, but learns that Alan has been found dead. A note points to his suicide, but something isn’t right. Susan needs to find the missing pages, which could hold the answer to the mystery behind Alan’s death.
In the next installment, ‘Moonflower Murders.’ Susan is in Crete, running a hotel with her fiance Andreas. She’s approached by a couple who own a British country hotel. Eight years ago, a murder took place there. Alan Conway visited the hotel and wrote a novel based on the events, naming it “Atticus Pund Takes the Case.”
The couple’s daughter, Cecily Treherne, read the book and realized the wrong man was jailed for the murder committed. Now the young woman is missing, and her parents are desperate to find her. They ask Susan to uncover the secret hidden in Alan’s novel and help find Cecily. Disturbed by the shadow of a murder and disappearance that technically has nothing to do with her, Susan feels compelled to solve the mystery.
