Facts & Expert Analysis About Mexico eSIM Plans

  • Travel eSIMs: International eSIM services partner with local networks to provide mobile data in your chosen country or region.
  • Uses: Travel eSIM plans are an alternative to using a local SIM card or your home mobile data abroad.
  • Compatibility: While most modern phones are eSIM-compatible, not all are. You’ll need to confirm that your phone supports eSIMs before buying a plan.

Before you touch down in Mexico, ready to order an Uber or crack open Google Maps, you want to make sure your phone is well connected. A travel eSIM provides internet data from local carriers so you can browse, stream and use your favorite apps as normal while abroad. Without further ado, I’ll reveal the best eSIM for Mexico and four worthy alternatives.

Cloudwards’ Choice: Saily

Cloudwards' Choice: Saily

Kit Copson is a Cloudwards expert in eSIMs and travel technology.

Saily is my top recommendation because it packs in handy security features, and the customer support team has always been super fast with responses. However, if you want a larger 50GB plan — which Saily doesn’t have — a provider like Airalo may be a better option.

The 5 Best eSIM for Mexico Options: Full Comparison

I tested and explored five eSIM solutions, comparing pricing, feature sets, available speeds and user experience. Whether you’re a digital nomad or a vacationer, you’re sure to find something that suits your needs.

1. Saily — Best Overall eSIM for Mexico

saily security features
Saily is unique in its offering of privacy and security features.

Pros:

  • Recurring plans
  • Security & privacy features
  • Efficient & friendly support

Cons:

  • Relatively pricey Mexico plans
  • 20GB maximum fixed plan (except Saily Ultra)

Saily’s data-only plans come with access to three security and privacy features: an ad blocker (this helps conserve data), a virtual location changer (more than 115 locations), and a web protection feature to help you avoid trackers and risky sites. Learn more about these features in my Saily review

If you subscribe to Saily Ultra, a recurring plan with 30GB of high-speed data per month, you’ll get a full security package, including NordVPN, NordPass, NordLocker and Incogni.

Saily Hands-On Testing

saily-support
Saily has always been consistent when it comes to responding quickly to queries.

I’ve used Saily a few times, and I’ve always had a smooth experience and received responses from customer support within seconds. My only gripe is that you have to contact support if you want to learn which networks Saily partners with in Mexico — this isn’t specified on the plan page.

Saily Pricing & Value

Many Saily plans are priced similarly to those of competitors, but unfortunately, its Mexico plans are relatively expensive, especially compared to Airalo’s. To put this in perspective, Saily’s 20GB plan currently costs more than Airalo’s 50GB plan.

2. Airalo — Best Cheap eSIM for Mexico Travelers With Call & Text Plans

airalo mexico
Airalo’s data, call and text plans come with a phone number
to make calls and send texts the traditional way.

Pros:

  • Data, call & text plans
  • Affordable 30-day plans
  • Broad regional coverage

Cons:

  • No security features
  • Pricey three-day plans

Airalo is ideal for travelers to Mexico who want a plan with a phone number. The Mexico data, call and text plans can be used only in Mexico, though. If you want to call someone outside of Mexico, a Discover Global data, call and text plan (138 countries) would be better.

You don’t need a phone number to chat with people back home while you’re in Mexico; you can use apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger with your eSIM’s data. However, if you prefer to call and text the traditional way, Airalo’s phone number plans might be handy.

Airalo is also a good choice if you want decent regional coverage (17 countries) in Latin America. My Airalo review goes into more detail about its plans.

Airalo Hands-On Testing

airalo app

Airalo delivered both times I’ve tested it. Customer support has improved quite a bit in the past few months as well: It used to take a while to get a response, but now it usually takes just a few seconds.

Airalo Pricing & Value

Airalo’s 30-day plans are reasonable, especially its 50GB plan. This gives it an edge over competitors like Saily and Nomad. On the other hand, the three-day plans are quite expensive considering the short validity period.

3. Holafly — Best Unlimited Data eSIM for Mexico

holafly mexico
Holafly sells flexible unlimited plans ranging from one day to 90 days.

Pros:

  • Subscription plans
  • Flexible unlimited plans
  • Efficient customer support

Cons:

  • Expensive
  • No direct installation for Android

If you think you might run out of fixed data, Holafly’s Mexico eSIM with unlimited data might be the way to go. While many providers offer unlimited data plans, Holafly is the most flexible, letting you choose any number of days up to 90. My Holafly review has more details.

Holafly Hands-On Testing

holafly app
Holafly’s app is user-friendly.

Holafly’s app is easy to navigate, and I received quick responses from a human when using the chat feature. Setup was also simple via my iPhone, but Android users can’t install the Holafly plan automatically via the app: You have to use a QR code or the manual installation method.

Holafly Pricing & Value

Holafly is ideal for not having to worry about top-ups or running low on data, but this convenience does come at a higher price. Nevertheless, the longer the plan duration, the lower the per-day price. For example, a one-day plan costs $6.90, while a seven-day plan brings the daily price down to around $4.27.

Note: You can choose any number of days from one to 90. The table below shows just a few examples.

4. Nomad — Best Mexico eSIM Service With a Free Trial

nomad app
Nomad is ideal if you want to get a feel for an eSIM before buying a plan.

Pros:

  • Free trial
  • Efficient customer support
  • Broad Latin America regional plan

Cons:

  • Short unlimited plans

Not many eSIMs offer free trials these days, but fortunately, American eSIM company Nomad is an exception. You can get 1GB of free data for three days when you first sign up. Check out my Nomad review to learn more.

Nomad Hands-On Testing

nomad support
I was impressed by how quickly Nomad’s support team got back to me.

Nomad worked well for me. I had no issues streaming and browsing with it, and I found the customer support to be efficient: I asked to speak to a human, and a friendly agent jumped on the chat within seconds.

Nomad Pricing & Value

Nomad’s Mexico eSIMs are a little cheaper than Saily’s equivalents. As for Airalo, Nomad’s 1GB and 3GB plans offer better value, but Airalo’s 30-day 5GB and 10GB plans are more budget-friendly. Therefore, Nomad is better suited to those with light data needs.

5. Roamless — Best Pay-As-You-Go eSIM

roamless esim
Roamless offers both fixed and pay-as-you-go plans.

Pros:

  • Free trial
  • Fixed & pay-as-you-go plans
  • No expiration date on pay-as-you-go plans

Cons:

  • Pricey pay-as-you-go plans
  • Service fee for purchases under $20

Roamless stands out in that it offers something for everyone: You can get a fixed (30-day) plan or add funds to your Roamless wallet and use them on a pay-as-you-go basis. New users get 400MB of free data on the fixed Mexico plan and $1.25 in their Roamless wallet on the pay-as-you-go plan.

Roamless Hands-On Testing

roamless support
Roamless offers support on the website and
in the app via live chat.

I didn’t spot any red flags while using Roamless. I found the app to be streamlined and easy to get around, and customer support got right back to me when I reached out.

Roamless Pricing & Value

Roamless’ heavy-data fixed plans for Mexico are more budget-friendly than the pay-as-you-go plans. For example, a 10GB fixed plan costs $22.95, but you’d need to load $34.50 in funds for the same amount of gigabytes on the pay-as-you-go plan. The pay-as-you-go option, however, is ideal if you want data that doesn’t expire. Learn more in my full Roamless review

There are two steps to getting an eSIM to work: installation and activation. Luckily, the process is simple. The steps below provide a brief rundown (you’ll find more detailed steps on your provider’s website or app):

  1. Follow the eSIM provider’s instructions to install your plan via the app, a QR code or manually (options may vary depending on your device).
  2. When you’re ready to use your data, go into your phone’s settings.
  3. Go into your cellular settings (on iOS) or connections/network & internet settings (on Android) and find the SIM/mobile networks area.
  4. Check that your eSIM plan is enabled and set as the data source, and confirm that data roaming is toggled on.
